The drive shaft is on the outside of the tank and the impeller is on the inside, and they are only connected by the attraction between the two sets of magnets. A hole is cut in the bottom of the tank, and a cup-like piece called a "mounting post" is inserted through and welded into that hole so that it protrudes into the tank.
